The Hero I-League is reportedly set to expand to include 12 teams next season due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. According to Goal, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) likely to waive off relegation in the 2019-20 campaign, since the league will be called off prematurely due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Apart from the exception of Mohun Bagan who are set to play in the Indian Super League (ISL) next season, ten I-League teams will continue to be a part of the competition as of now. Delhi-based club Sudeva FC have been keen on being included in the I-League, and if they make it to the competition, then the number of participating clubs will be reinstated to 11.

The report also states that the AIFF are keen on completing the Second Divison and promoting the champions to the I-League who will then make up the 12 teams to play in the I-League next season.

A challenge that is facing most teams is the fact that most player contracts run out after 31st May and given the current scenario it is highly unlikely that live football will resume within May.

Following a circular from the Government of India, all matches were suspended from March 15. No sporting activity in the country can take place at least until May 3.
