Mumbai City FC could reportedly be set to appoint former FC Goa head coach Sergio Lobera as manager for the next Indian Super League (ISL) season. According to Goal, the Spaniard is yet to pen a deal but is set to take on the hot seat at Mumbai City FC for the upcoming season.
Lobera has experience in managing lower-division Spanish Clubs like Terrassa, San Roque, Ceuta, Las Palmas, and Moroccan side Moghreb Tetouan. He saw FC Goa finish runners-up in the 2018-19 ISL season as his side lost 0-1 to Bengaluru FC in the final in Mumbai.
The Gaurs continued their impressive form in the 2018-19 season and lifted the 2019 Super Cup.
However, during the 2019-2020 season, owing to multiple issues with team management and owners led to the dismissal of Lobera and his support-staff. FC Goa finished top of the table but failed to make any mark in the knockout stage and bowed out of the tournament.
Earlier reports claimed that Kerala Blasters and Jamshedpur FC too were targeting the Spaniard. In the case of the Blasters, the two parties couldn’t come to an agreement and thus decided to move away from negotiations. Meanwhile, Jamshedpur FC have already submitted their offer and are awaiting a response from Lobera’s camp.
Lobera has also played a crucial role in the development of some Indian players, who are continuing to show great promise. Mandar Rao Dessai, Brandon Fernandes, Seriton Fernandes, and Jackichand Singh flourished under him.
