Mikel Arteta says the club will do everything within its power to convince Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to sign a new deal at Arsenal. The Gabon international has less than 18 months to run on his existing deal at the Emirates, which he signed following a £57million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2018.
Aubameyang scored twice in Arsenal's 3-2 win over Everton, which lifted the Gunners within three points of sixth-placed Tottenham. The striker who tops this season’s Premier League goalscoring charts alongside Jamie Vardy with 17, is out of contract at the end of next season and has been linked with other clubs.
“They are completely right to want him because he is a superb player,” Arsenal boss Arteta said
“He completely deserves to be liked by all the other teams. Hopefully we can convince him that this is the right place for him and that he has a future here. Before I took over I had my questions about him but he has shown his commitment. I wanted him to show if he wanted to do it and do it physically.
"I'm so happy with him. He is scoring important goals and as a captain he is giving a great example to everyone else with the way he is working defensively."
Aubameyang was linked with a move to Barcelona all throughout the January transfer window who were desperate for a striker following season-long injuries to Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele.
Sunday's win means Arsenal remain unbeaten in 2020 and gives them back-to-back league victories for the first time since the opening two matches of the campaign. It also means they have won three games in the past week, having won at Newcastle before beating Olympiakos in the first leg of their Europa league last-32 tie on Thursday.
