5 Highest Paid Defenders in the World Right Now

Liverpool are set to hand Virgil van Dijk a massive new £50million deal to fend off Juventus, according to reports. The 28-year-old defender is primed to put pen to paper on a huge five-year contract that Jurgen Klopp hopes will tie him to the club.

Football Insider claim Van Dijk can expect to earn around £200,000 a week including bonuses if the deal is finalised - a £75,000-a-week rise on his current pay packet. It would be no more than the former Celtic man deserves after another imperious season at the heart of the Liverpool backline, but he's still relatively low down on the list of the highest-earning defenders.

Van Dijk will be, however, the highest-earning defender in the Premier League if he signs the rumoured deal. With wages of £190,000 at Manchester United, captain Harry Maguire is currently the highest-paid defender in England following his £80 million transfer.

But how does that compare to the top 5 highest-paid defenders in the world?

5. Marquinhos - £216,000-per-week

Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos takes home a sweet £216,000-a-week, and he comes only fifth on this list! The 25-year-old Brazil international signed a new contract with the French champions in January that will keep him at the Parc des Princes until 2024.

Marquinhos is the club's vice-captain and has made 270 appearances for PSG, picking up 19 trophies along the way.

4. Gerard Pique - £220,000-per-week

Barcelona's Gerard Pique takes home a neat £220,000-per-week, and comes in at number four on this list. He penned a four-and-half-year contract with the Catalan giants in January 2018, extending his stay at the Nou Camp until June 30, 2022. Barca have inserted a mammoth buyout clause of €500 million in his contract to fend off potential buyers.

The Nou Camp legend has poured time and money into revamping tennis' Davis Cup as well as buying a controlling stake in Andorra FC.

3. Lucas Hernandez - £250,000-per-week

Lucas Hernandez is one of the highest earners at Bayern Munich with a sweet £250,000-a-week paycheque and comes in third on this list. His salary puts him just behind the likes of Robert Lewandowski (€17m), Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, and Jérôme Boateng (all €16m) at the Allianz Arena.

Hernandez has been missing this season for the Bavarian giants due to injury but is aiming to be back on the field soon.

2. Thiago Silva - £300,000-per-week

35-year old Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva is still earning a reported £300,000-a-week, and comes in second on this list. However, recent reports have claimed that the French club are looking to offload one of their longest-serving players due to his age and his wages.

According to L’Equipe (h/t Culture PSG ), Silva is the third highest-paid player at PSG and the club are looking to free up the wage bill this summer.

1. Matthijs de Ligt - £416,000-per-week

Van Dijk's Netherlands center-back partner Matthijs de Ligt makes considerably more at Juventus, as he rakes in a whopping £416,000-a-week including bonuses, after Mino Raiola landed him a lucrative deal in the summer.

That is £116,000 a week more than what the second highest-paid defender earns. The 20-year-old defender joined the Italian champions last summer for €70million after a stellar season with Dutch champions Ajax.
