The first football superstar to come from India, Bhaichung Bhutia is widely hailed as the torchbearer of Indian football and it was him who brought the sport into the public consciousness in the country.
Called as "God's gift to Indian football", by three-time Indian Player of the Year, I.M. Vijayan - the Sikkimnese Sniper netted 27 goals in 82 appearances for his country in international footballer while also scoring prolifically for East Bengal and Mohun Bagan at club level.
Bhutia became only the second Indian to play professionally when he signed for Bury in 1999 while also winning a number of individual honours, before eventually getting into Politics. The 43-year-old remains a very popular figure in the country,
