Last time round, Lazio came out victorious – picking up a 1-0 win against Gil Azzurri at Stadio Olimpico. However, Simone Inzaghi and his side will be required to travel to Naples on Tuesday, hoping to pick up another win.
So far, both sides have experienced comfortable victories in the competition, with Napoli knocking out Perugia and Lazio humiliating Cremonese in the Round of 16.
However, their current league form tells a different story as highly-flying Lazio sit 21 points above Napoli in the table, with the Naples side currently in crisis. Therefore, do Gil Azzurri have what it takes to defeat the Biancocelesti in the upcoming Coppa Italia tie?

Napoli are currently suffering with a few injury concerns as they head into the fixture against Lazio. Dries Mertens remains sidelined, following adductor problems he picked up last month. Meanwhile, Kalidou Koulibaly is also out with a shoulder injury – and Kevin Malcuit continues his long recovery, after suffering an ACL injury last year.
Faouzi Ghoulam is also doubtful for the upcoming clash against Lazio, having suffered with a muscle injury and is unlikely to return on Tuesday.
As for Lazio, they also have a few players set to miss the upcoming game, with Adam Marusic, Danilo Cataldi and Ricardo Kishna all out injured. Marusic is currently out with a muscular injury with his expected return date still unknown, while Cataldi is suffering with a calf problem. Kishna is still undergoing his long recovery, having ruptured his ligament.

Despite Lazio’s current form, it’s no surprise that Napoli hold the upper hand historically – securing 14 wins against the Biancocelesti, compared to Lazio’s eight victories. There have also been eight draws between the two sides, but Gil Azzurri have always been firm favourites in the past.
However, this season, Lazio have been taking Italy by storm and their latest 1-0 victory against Napoli earlier this month proves they are currently considered the better side.
In the last ten games, Napoli have won seven times, proving Lazio’s dominance is a recent factor to say the least. In these last ten fixtures, there have also been three or more goals.
Napoli’s recent form couldn’t be worse – with the Naples side winning just one of their last 12 league matches, seeing them sit in the bottom half of Serie A. Their most recent match resulted in another loss for Gil Azzurri as they were defeated 2-0 at home to Fiorentina.
It’s also worth noting that Napoli have only won two of their last nine matches at San Paolo Stadium, with both results coming in cup fixtures.
On the other hand, Lazio’s recent record couldn’t be more different, with the side currently sitting third in the table – just six points behind current leaders Juventus. Their latest league game saw another convincing win against Sampdoria, with the squad currently in high spirits as they prepare for the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia.
Here’s how the two teams have performed in their last five games.
|Napoli 0-2 Fiorentina (18/01)||Lazio 5-1 Sampdoria (18/01)|
|Napoli 2-0 Perugia (14/01)||Lazio 4-0 Cremonese (14/01)|
|Lazio 1-0 Napoli (11/01)||Lazio 1-0 Napoli (11/01)|
|Napoli 1-3 Inter Milan (06/01)||Brescia 1-2 Lazio (05/01)|
|Sassuolo 1-2 Napoli (22/12)||Juventus 1-3 Lazio (22/12)|
Despite Napoli’s history, you simply can’t ignore Lazio’s impressive form this campaign.
With the Biancocelesti arguably competing against the likes of Inter and Juventus for the Serie A title, they are favourites to come out victorious in Naples and move to the next stage of the competition.
Prediction: Napoli 1-2 Lazio
