5 Players Who Have Scored the Most Goals From Outside the Box Since the Start of the 2017/18 Season

There are a number of strikers who are very prolific when it comes to scoring from inside the box, but it takes a special talent to net from outside the box. A few of them seem to excel at shots from a distance, and here we take a look at five of the best.

1. Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - 25 Goals

It comes as no surprise as to who tops this list, with Lionel Messi netting 25 goals from outside the box, which is more than double of the next closest player. The Barcelona icon is a major reason why the Catalan giants continue to be feared in Europe and he will need to be at his best if they are to challenge for trophies this season.

2. Memphis Depay (Lyon) - 11 Goals

Memphis Depay might have flopped at Manchester United, but he showed the world why it was too early to write him off as he bounced back at Lyon, becoming the focal point of their attack.

Since the 2017/18 season, the Dutchman scored 48 goals of which 11 came from outside the box and his season ending injury comes as a blow to both club and country.

3. Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern) - 10 Goals

Philippe Coutinho might have struggled at Barcelona, but there was no doubt that he was the main man for Liverpool, while looking like he is discovering his best form at Bayern Munich.

The attacking midfielder has netted 10 goals from outside the box, and for sure will be expected to deliver some more curlers if Bayern are to compete for both domestic and European honours, come the end of the season.

4. Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City, Manchester City) - 10 Goals

A tricky winger with all the skills in his kitty, many forget that Riyad Mahrez has a brilliant shot on him and the statistics show that he has scored 10 from outside the box. The Algerian who moved to Manchester City from Leicester in 2018, has off late reproduced the form that he showed in his debut season and is increasingly becoming a favourite of manager, Pep Guardiola.

5. Dries Mertens (Napoli) - 10 Goals

Widely considered as one of the most creative attacking players in the world, Dries Mertens has been a loyal servant for Napoli despite not winning silverware with them. The Belgian has been very prolific for the Italian club, though it looks very likely that his time at the club will come to an end next season.
