Barcelona announced the termination of Ernesto Valverde’s contract and soon after, Quique Setien was announced as the new manager of the Blaugranas. The former Real Betis coach is known for his attacking approach and seems to be the ideal man to lead the Catalans.
He will, however, need a squad that suits his requirement and for that, he might need to get rid of some players – and here are three of them.
3. Nelson Semedo
The Portuguese came with quite a lot of expectations on his shoulders. He became a highly coveted young full-back at Benfica and, as a result, the Catalans snapped him up for €30million plus incentives.
So far, however, he has had a mixed career at the Camp Nou thus far. In some games, he looks like the heir apparent of Dani Alves and in others, he doesn’t even seem fit to lace the boots of the Brazilian.
As a result, Setien might need a better option at right-back, which is why Semedo might need to be sold.
2. Ivan Rakitic
If this was Rakitic at his peak, then he would have been of great use for the former Betis boss. The Croat once had the ability to control the tempo of games but he seems to have lost the sharpness.
He often looks slow on the ball, which could be a problem in the system that Setien will place at Barca. As a result, he might be sold and the funds could then be used to sign someone younger.
1. Sergio Busquets
Sergio Busquets is a Barcelona legend without any doubt. He was the part of the greatest Blaugrana team of all time and acted as the base of the greatest midfield of the modern era.
However, the Spaniard is way past his expired date and needs to be replaced. Like Rakitic, he is slow to react to situations and isn’t as effective as he once was. Setien will need someone who is quicker to react defensively and is also aggressive with his passing.
Which is why Busquets needs to leave.
