AS Roma defender, Chris Smalling has so far exceeded expectations at the club after moving to Italy on a year-long loan from Manchester United in the summer and has found a new lease of life after struggling to hold down his place at Old Trafford.
Fans have been so impressed by his performances with many even jokingly comparing him to Italian legend, Paolo Maldini by giving the Englishman the moniker of "Smalldini". However, the 30-year-old met his match in Juventus superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo who absolutely destroyed the defender with an outrageous piece of skill during the Bianconeri's 2-1 win over Roma in the Serie A on Sunday.
Ronaldo had already found his name on the scoresheet after slotting home a penalty to give Juve a 2-0 lead in the 10th minute, though the real eyecatching moment was when he made a fool out of Smalling with an audacious piece of skill.
Taking the ball down with his right foot, Ronaldo brought it under control with his back to Smalling. With a sixth sense, Ronaldo then stops the ball with his right foot and flicks it clear with his left before sprinting to the touchline to put in a cross.
While the move ultimately did not result in a goal, it did send Twitter into meltdown with fans going gaga over the move.
One said: "Cristiano Ronaldo just ended Chris Smalling's career," while another posted, "Ronaldo is trying to prove that Ole was right to loan Smalling." Another comment read, "Juve win, Ronaldo scores the winner and terrorises the best CB in Europe (Smalling). Another day at the office."
With one fan claiming that: "Smalling may never play again!"
The win on the night ensured that Juve moved back to the top of the league table with 48 points from 19 games, two ahead of second placed, Inter Milan while Ronaldo showed signs of getting back to his best, with the striker now netting 14 goals in just 16 games in Serie A.
