Indian national cricket team's star opening batsman Rohit Sharma has been appointed as
La Liga’s official Facebook page confirmed the news by posting Rohit’s photo holding a bat and a football alongside the trophy.
On Wednesday, Rohit Sharma, a Real Madrid fan, became the fastest batsman and the first Indian to hit 400 sixes in international cricket. He achieved the landmark in his 354th international match across formats during the third T20I in Mumbai on Sunday.
Sharma himself took to Twitter to express his gratitude on being handed this ambassadorial appointment:
Hola India/España, as you guys know, football has always held a special place in my heart so this association is so special to me. And to be named the ambassador for the La Liga is so humbling. La Liga is one of the most popular professional football leagues in the world, with an average attendance of 26,933 for league matches in the 2018–19 season.
Their average attendance is the sixth-highest of any domestic professional sports league in the world and the third-highest of any professional association football league in the world, behind the Bundesliga and the Premier League.
Not only that, it is home to one of the biggest club football matches of the world, El Clasico, between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.
With the league starting to go ahead with their already existing plans for India, all we can hope is that it will not be long enough before we see Lionel Messi stepping foot on Indian soil.
Moreover, it would have been much better to see an Indian footballer being appointed as a brand ambassador of one of the most followed leagues in the world, than a cricketer!
