Barcelona talisman, Lionel Messi has opened up on Liverpool's, Sadio Mane finishing fourth in the Ballon d'Or rankings, claiming that, "It’s a shame to see Mane finish in fourth place".

The Senagelese attacker was in brilliant form for the Reds during the 2018/19 campaign and was instrumental in them winning the UEFA Champions League and recording 97 points in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old netted 26 goals in all competitions for his club last season, while also scoring three goals to help his side reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations during the summer, only for them to fall at the last hurdle.

Messi for his part voted for Mane to win the FIFA The Best award earlier this year, and has now expressed his disappointment on his fourth placed finish in the Ballon d'Or ceremony which took place in Paris on Monday.

"It’s a shame to see Mane finish in fourth place. But I think there have been a lot of great players this year. That’s why it was difficult to choose a particular player. But I chose Sadio Mane because he’s a player that I like," Messi told Canal+, as quoted by Metro.

"Mane achieved a great year that was exceptional for the entire Liverpool team. That’s why I chose him. I repeat, there were a lot of very great players this year, so the choice was difficult."

Mane has started the season in fine fashion yet again for Liverpool and it will be interesting to see where he stands when the award season rolls out next time around.
