Lionel Messi won the 6th Ballon d’Or of his career last night as he beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil van Dijk to become the best player in the world for this performances this year. The difference between him and the Dutchman was ever so little but the Argentine managed to topple the Liverpool star and reach the pinnacle once again.
As a result, Messi now holds the record of the most Ballon d’Or awards won by a single player, overtaking Ronaldo’s who has five – and this is why it is a piece of good news for Juventus.
The Portuguese superstar has been the main adversary of Messi and it was because of him that the Argentine didn’t completely ransack and dominate the world of football for the last decade.
If it weren’t for the Portuguese, the Argentine might have won at least 10 Ballon d’Ors by, taking him above and beyond anyone.

—Pichichi number six
—FIFA's The Best award
—First player to win six Ballons d'Or
At one point, however, it looked as though the presence of the former Sporting star wouldn’t matter for the former Newell’s youngster as Messi had taken a 4-1 lead over Ronaldo and it looked like there was no way for him to catch the Barcelona star.
And yet, in 2017, Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or to make it 5-5 with the Argentine in what could be dubbed as one of the greatest comebacks in football.
And now, with the Argentina captain taking the lead again, Ronaldo will be fired up to close the gap. The Portuguese had been looking weary this season and could imagine that it might have been because as a player, he had done everything there was to do.
But now, the fire in him will be roaring even more because he has something chase now, something to die for. After going down 4-1, he admitted to having felt bad but it only fired him up to work harder.
As a result, we could expect him to once again buck up and start performing at an insane level for Juventus. Even though age might not be on his side, Ronaldo has the determination and work ethic to succeed and now he has the extra incentive to do better.
He wouldn’t want to retire with one less Ballon d’Or than Messi – which is why we could fully expect him to reach his best form for Juventus in an attempt to make them win the Champions League.
And that is good news for the Old Lady.
