Juventus superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes has defended his client after he lost out to rival, Lionel Messi in the Ballon d'Or stakes, insisting that the Portugese international is the "best player in history".

Ronaldo who finished third in the Ballon d'Or standings, behind Messi and Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk, skipped attending the ceremony at Paris, instead preferring to travel to Milan where he was honoured with the 2018/19 Serie A Player of the Year award.

Despite Messi winning a record sixth award, Mendes was not impressed, reiterating that Ronaldo remains the best ever in the history of the sport.

"Cristiano is the best player in history, and you know it!," he said to reporters as quoted by Dailymail.

The 34-year-old who moved to Juventus in the summer of 2018, has not had the best of times this season, managing to score only seven goals in 16 games in all competitions, though he has been very prolific for his national country.

Ronaldo for his part will be looking to get back on the Ballon d'Or honours board next season and for that he would need to lead the Bianconeri to glory in Europe and the UEFA Champions League, with the Italian giants last winning the premier competition in 1996.
