Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has stated that he hopes Lionel Messi wins the Ballon d’Or for his performances this year. The Ballon d’Or ceremony later tonight will award the best player of the year and Messi is the frontrunner for it alongside Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ter Stegen, however, hopes that it is the Argentine wins it:
The German had an excellent match against Atletico Madrid as he made two crucial saves in the first half, which allowed Barca to stay in a position where a single goal would be able to win the game for them.
In the end, it is exactly what happened as Messi was able to score in the 86th minute to bring home all three points for the Catalans. Speaking about their performance, Ter Stegen stated that he and Messi were at their best.
"Everyone was at their best. In this case, Messi scored and I kept a clean sheet, which is what we wanted most. We defended when we needed to and we fought until the end to secure the victory."
"We always go out to defend as best as possible and we can't stop [the opponent] having chances every now and then. It was difficult for us, but we dealt with the early pressure."
