Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has questioned Manchester United's decision of paying £80million when they signed Harry Maguire from Leicester CityMaguire, 26, became the most expensive defender in history when he completed a lucrative and high-profile move to Old Trafford in July.

Despite being rated as one of the top defenders in the Premier League this season, Nicholas has questioned whether Maguire has improved United since his move.

Writing in his Sky Sports column, Nicholas said, "‘What has Harry Maguire done since he came in? Has he helped stabilise [the team]? Is there a decent centre-back partnership there?

"You could see that Manchester United would struggle against Sheffield United because they missed the physical presence of Scott McTominay. That’s how low United have fallen…

"I mention Maguire because they spent a fortune on him. They can’t find a partner for him. They’re all over the place at the moment."

"He was efficient and got about the pitch, but I don't want to hear nonsense about him being a leader and strong on the pitch already, it is too soon. He has started well, but I am suspect about the right-back and left-back positions at Man Utd. Chelsea could have easily scored two or three."

"I am still not convinced by Manchester United and I would still sell Paul Pogba."

United were held to a 2-2 draw at home on Sunday against Aston Villa, making it just two wins from their last nine games. They are currently placed ninth in the league table, eight points off the top-four.
