Anfield sure is a fortress, and like all fortresses, it has proven to be impenetrable as some of the best players in the world have failed to score there.
Sergio Aguero, for all his wonder goals against some of the biggest teams in the world, has failed to score at Anfield, and he did get close to finally getting that long-awaited goal on Sunday as Manchester City lost 3-1 to Liverpool.
Here are five great players who never scored a goal at Anfield:
5. Sergio Aguero (Appearances - 11)
Anfield isn't an easy place to play, but when it comes to Manchester City’s visits in the last few years, the atmosphere has been extremely competitive, making it tough for opposition players to focus.
As the defending Premier League champions took on the defending European Champions, tempers were running high in a match that City eventually lost 3-1, and Sergio Aguero failed to find his scoring boots yet again.
4. Dennis Bergkamp (Appearances - 6)
The Flying Duchman was a prominent figure in the Arsenal squad but failed to make his mark at Anfield. In the six times he played there, Dennis Bergkamp did not score a single goal in any competition.
Following Arsenal's penalty shootout victory over Manchester United in the 2005 FA Cup Final, he signed a one-year contract extension. He was an unused substitute in his final match for the Gunners against Barcelona in the Champions League final; the Blaugrana scored twice in the last 13 minutes to overturn Arsenal's early lead and win the competition.
3. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Appearances - 5)
The current Manchester United boss has 235 Premier League appearances for the club but the 'Baby-Faced Assasin' failed to score against Liverpool at Anfield, neither in the Premier League nor in any other competition.
During his last stint as a Premier League manager with Cardiff City in 2014, he faced a Liverpool side bang in the title race. After the game, which Liverpool won 6-3, when asked about their title challenge, he said, "I couldn't care less."
2. Eric Cantona (Appearances - 6)
The King failed to find the back of the net at Anfield during his time with Leeds United as well as Manchester United. A year before United signed him, Liverpool had a chance to do so. However, Liverpool's then manager turned him down, calling him a 'problem player'.
Though he didn't score at Anfield, he still gave enough grief to fans of the Merseyside by scoring an 86th-minute winner in the 1996 FA Cup final.
1. Lionel Messi (Appearances - 2)
Lionel Messi continues to break new boundaries every season, and shows no signs of slowing down. Surprisingly, there are just six teams out of the 37 that Messi has come up against in the Champions League he has failed to score against, and Liverpool is one of them.
The Argentine faced Liverpool on two occasions in the Champions League, coming in the last 16 round of the 2006/07 season. Next, he came up against them during last year's Champions League semi-finals where he failed to score at Anfield, yet again.
