Former Real Madrid superstar Luis Figo has stated that football shouldn’t be mingled with political problems since the sport should be used as a means to actually bring people together.
His comments come after the political turmoil in Catalonia following the conviction of separatist leaders, something which might postpone the clash between Real Madrid and Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
The Los Merengues were supposed to face their eternal rivals on the 26th of October but the match will most likely be scheduled to December due to the unrest in Catalonia and Figo thinks that sports shouldn’t be mingled with politics.
Figo: Xavi and Guardiola "are responsible for their own words"https://t.co/6aQySzmk8Y— AS English (@English_AS) October 17, 2019
"Football should not get in the middle of political problems," stated the Portuguese legend, as per AS. "Instead, football has to be a reason for things to work aligned to sporting values."
"Everyone involved has to decide what is best. In the end, I don't think either the date or the venue will be changed."
Following the arrest of the separatist leaders, both Xavi and Pep Guardiola voiced their opinion on the issue, as the pair were vehemently critical of the decision to put the leaders behind bars.
When asked about their opinions, Figo stated that the duo will have to take responsibility of their words.
"They are both free to voice their opinion, and to take responsibility for their words," he concluded.
