Bayern Munich defender Lucas Hernandez has revealed that he turned down the chance to move to rivals Real Madrid in the summer.
Hernandez joined Bayern from Athletico Madrid in an €80million deal this summer which was at the time a club-record transfer for the Bundesliga champions.
The 23-year-old has revealed that Real Madrid tried to sign him but he snubbed their offer out of loyalty to Atleti.
“Madrid had already tried to sign me, it's true, but not this summer,” Lucas told France Football.
“But I would not go there, not after having worn the colours of Atletico for such a long time.”
Lucas added: "When they [Bayern] asked me what number I wanted, I said 21. I used it when I won the World Cup for France and when I won the European Super Cup for Atlético.
"They told me that it was Lahm's number and that nobody had used it since he'd left, but that it would be mine if I signed. It is just an example of the trust they placed in me."
Lucas helped Atletico win the 2018 Europa League title and had become an integral part of Diego Simeone’s side over the years. Meanwhile, his younger brother Theo was signed by cross-city rivals Madrid in the summer of 2017.
