Real Madrid have moved ahead of arch rivals FC Barcelona in the race for Napoli star Fabian and want to sign the midfielder in January, according to reports in Spain.

Fabian has attracted plenty of interest since moving from Betis to Serie A side SSC Napoli, where the Spaniard has starred since his €30m arrival in 2018.

Barcelona have been keeping tabs on the 23-year-old, but rivals Los Blancos have reportedly jumped to the front of the queue.

AS report that while Fabian is garnering interest from clubs across Europe, Italian outlet Tuttosport says Barcelona are also eyeing Inter star Lautaro Martinez, who has a €111m release clause.

When Barcelona do decide to act on their desire for a new central midfielder, the Napoli man is expected to be near the top of their wish list, given that La Blaugrana have followed him for over four years already.

However, at the minute, the Spanish champions feel as though there are more urgent matters to attend to, but they are still expected to pursue Fabian - particularly if rumoured interest from rivals Real Madrid comes to fruition.

News of Fabian comes in the wake of reports claim that the likes of Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and Sergio Busquets could all grow frustrated with their reduced role this season, and the departures of all three would certainly leave Barcelona light in that department.
