5 Best Footballers Over 35 in Europe Right Now

In the football world, an athlete usually enjoys the best years in his 20s. Once they hit the 30s, there is a general feeling that the beginning of the end has commenced, unless the player in question is a goalkeeper.

However, there are exceptions to this case. In the world of football, there are players that age like wine and are still able to perform at the top level even when they are 35 or above.

And here are the five best players aged 35 or more…

5. Joaquin – 38-years-old

Joaquin is a true legend of Spanish football. He has been around for what seems like forever and yet, he is going strong. The right-winger might be 38 years of age but is still a starter for Real Betis in La Liga.

He has started six times in the league so far this season, scoring one goal and assisting two times. He doesn’t look like he is going to stop any time soon as he is still as athletic as ever.

4. Franck Ribery – 36-years-old

Franck Ribery left Bayern Munich this summer to join Fiorentina. While many thought that he might be done with top level football in Europe, he has shown that he is not finished yet.

He has scored twice and assisted once from the seven games that he has played for his new team so far this season. Such was his performance against Milan at San Siro that the home fans gave him a standing ovation when he left the pitch.

3. Fabio Quagliarella – 36-years-old

The Italian is a classic example of footballers aging like wine. Last season, he ended up as the highest scorer in Serie A with 26 goals to his name, outscoring even the great Cristiano Ronaldo.

He might have only one goal to his name from six matches so far this season in the league, but that doesn’t change the fact that he is among the best players over the age of 35 in the world.

While Sampdoria have struggled so far this season, Fabio Quagliarella's form will be vital if they are to avoid relegation.

2. Giorgio Chiellini – 35-years-old

You know how important a player is when the whole team suffers in his absence. Even though Giorgio Chiellini is 35 years of age, he was a mainstay in Juventus’ defence until he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in training.

He is now out of the team and not expected to be back until early next year. However, that doesn’t change the fact that he is among the finest defenders in the world among active players, with both club and country still relying heavily on him.

1. Thiago Silva – 35-years-old

If there is another 35-year-old better than Chiellini, it is perhaps Thiago Silva. The Brazilian has been around for a long time. At first, he established himself as one of the best in the world at Milan

Then, he joined Paris Saint-Germain and is a mainstay in the team despite being in his mid-30s. He has played in eight league games for the French giants this season and has been a rock at the heart of the defence.
