Ajax chief Edwin van der Sar has compared Juventus superstar Matthijs de Ligt to his club teammate Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of the defender's his desire to be the best in the world.

De Ligt is one of the most sought after and exciting defenders in world football and was subject to a three way war between elite European football clubs who were interested in signing him last summer.

The Dutchman eventually chose Serie A champions Juventus just so he could get the chance to work with his 'hero' Cristiano Ronaldo.

And Van der Sar, who has managed to have a look at both De Ligt and Ronaldo very closely, has highlighted the similarities between them in terms of desire, attitude and ambition.

In an interview with ESPN, as quoted by AS, Van der Sar started by speaking about De Ligt as he said, "He had been all his life at Ajax. So to step away, move with your girlfriend and the family to a different city, a different language…"

The former Manchester United goalkeeper continued, "But his mentality and the way he wants to improve… he wants to be the best defender in the world. And I’ve seen that with a few players. One of them is playing in the same team, Cristiano Ronaldo."

Revealing how he realised that Ronaldo and De Ligt are similar in terms of mentality, Van der Sar concluded, "When I played at Man United with him (Ronaldo), he had the same desire and attitude to work hard, to become better every training. And that’s the same mentality and hunger as Matthijs de Ligt.”
