5 Players Arsenal Sold That Came as A Shock When it Happened

The recent summer transfer window has seen a number of Arsenal players depart, with the Gunners finally clearing a lot of the deadwood. There have been a few Arsenal sales in the recent past that have shocked fans, including one player in the recently concluded window.

Here are five Arsenal player sales that were a shock when they happened.

5. Jose Antonio Reyes

Jose Antonio Reyes joined Arsenal in January 2004 and played a part in the invincible season. However, the Spaniard was not able to fully adjust to life in England and angled for a move away from the team, especially after having played only five minutes of the 2006 Champions League final.

However, the move was not expected as the 23-year-old was expected to be the next generation of wingers at the club and had scored more than 20 goals for them.

4. Nicolas Anelka

Another player that left far too early was Nicolas Anelka. The French striker was a prolific goalscorer in the two seasons he was at the club, but stunned fans by moving to Real Madrid for £23million. The player later revealed that the reason he left because he was angered by fans for not putting faith in him to be a long term successor to club legend Ian Wright.

3. Lassana Diarra

Lassana Diarra moved to Arsenal in the summer of 2007, but after just 13 appearances and six months, he made the shock transfer to Portsmouth in January 2008. Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claimed that Diarra did not have any patience and wanted to be a regular starter right from the get go.

It was one of the most surprising transfers the club saw for a long time.

2. Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi came through from the Arsenal academy and has been a regular at the club for the last three seasons. However, during the transfer deadline day, Arsenal shockingly agreed to sell the player to Everton for nearly £40million. It came totally out of the blue and was not expected by the player or the fans, but it went through anyway.

1. Robin van Persie

Robin van Persie had one of the most prolific seasons during the 2011/12 campaign, almost single handedly dragging them to a top four finish. However, the player refused to sign a contract extension with the club and Arsenal were forced to sell the player to rivals Manchester United, considering he had only just a single year left on his contract.
