Bayern Munich haven’t won the Champions League in a while with their last triumph coming in 2013, which is now six years ago. In the footballing world, six years might not be a lot of time but for a club like Bayern, who play in a relatively easy domestic league, winning Europe’s elite competition holds a special place.
The Bavarians have been a sleeping giant of late but this season, that could change. The German giants are ready take over Europe this season and here are three reasons why…
3. Old Guard Gone
As important as Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery were to Bayern Munich, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that they were holding back the Bavarians a bit in the last few years.
This summer, however, both of them left the club – and in an amicable manner, just like they deserved – and Bayern now look at a new beginning with players who are younger and hungrier.
Robben and Ribery were key to the club winning the treble back in 2013 and it would be great if the current team could honour their legacy by winning the Champions League this season.
2. Great New Additions
The German outfit have made some really impressive signings in the transfer market this summer. They broke their transfer record with the acquisition of French defender Lucas Hernandez.
They also added Benjamin Pavard, instantly improving their backline. They also brought in Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic to bolster the attack. Coupled with the world-class players they already had, the Munich outfit are now looking at a season where they can genuinely fight for the Champions League title.
1. Better League Competition
This might just be the most underrated aspect of winning the Champions League. Having a strong domestic league automatically ensures that a team does well in Europe.
The last time Bayern won the Champions League was in 2013 and it was preceded by a season in which they ended up second in all competitions. Borussia Dortmund were giving them fierce competition in the league and the Bavarians had to be on their toes all throughout the campaign. They even faced off in the Champions League final that season.
Something similar happened last season as Bayern Munich scraped through to win the Bundesliga. Dortmund are expected to pile on the pressure on the Bavarian giants this season too, which would automatically force Bayern into becoming a better team overall.
