Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has revealed his three best signings during his time as the manager of the Reds. The Spaniard was the last manager before Jurgen Klopp to win the Champions League with the Anfield outfit.
Like the German, he, too, had an exceptional bunch of players at his disposal. Writing in his column for The Athletic, he stated that the trio of Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano were the best signings he made as the coach of the Merseyside outfit.
"Pffft. Let me think about this... It's so difficult," he wrote on The Athletic.
"If I'm talking about my players from my time in England, it has to be [Fernando] Torres, [Xabi] Alonso and [Javier] Mascherano.
Rafa Benitez: "I'm really proud of what we achieved in 2005, but I have to say that the 2019 team is stronger already. The team that we had, what we had at this time was great team effort and a lot of character, as well as commitment on the pitch.”pic.twitter.com/EcwZNnVsuL— Anfield Watch (@AnfieldWatch) August 28, 2019
Benitez added that he made the call by judging their performance at the top level and the amount of success that they brought at Anfield.
"If you talk about success and performances at the top level, those players stand out."
Torres cost Liverpool just £20million and turned out to be one of the best signings that the Reds ever made as he scored 81 goals from 142 games for them.
Meanwhile, Alonso became one of the best deep-lying midfielders in the game at Anfield while Mascherano was renowned for his ball-winning abilities at the base of midfield.
