When Jurgen Klopp took over the reins at Liverpool, they were a team fighting for Champions League spots and were just a shadow of their former glorious self. However, the German tactician changed the scope of things entirely for the Reds.
The arrival of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah turned out to be a masterstroke as they perfectly complemented Roberto Firmino in attack. However, the signings that elevated the Merseyside outfit to the elite team that they are today were those of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker.
With this bunch of players, the Reds could break their Premier League curse this season and here are three reasons why…
3. Lethal Attacking Trio
Liverpool can make a case for having the best front three in not just the Premier League, but the whole of Europe. The trio of Mane, Firmino and Salah complement each other perfectly and play to their strengths.
As a result, the Reds don’t have to worry about scoring goals as the three of them always find ways to get the ball in the back of the net. Indeed, the fact that Jurgen Klopp's team don’t really have creative midfielders and yet manage to create so many chances is a testament to their scoring ability and pressing that induces errors out of opponents.
2. Winning Experience
Once a team wins a title, they don’t really stop until they reach a saturation point. Winning is like an addiction, once you get the taste of it, you don’t really want to stop.
Liverpool won the Champions League last season and it gave them a taste of how it feels to win major accolades. Winning a European final always boosts the mindset of the players and allows them to play with confidence.
As a result, the Reds' squad will be hungry for more this season and would want to win the title that has eluded them for almost three decades now.
1. Defensive Excellence
Sir Alex Ferguson once said that attack wins you games but defence wins you titles, and what he said couldn’t be any truer. When Salah, Mane and Firmino joined forces at Liverpool, they scored a lot of goals but the team were still struggling to pose a challenge because they were leaking too many goals.
The arrival of Virgil van Dijk in 2018 January and Andy Robertson in the previous summer, coupled with the rise of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez, and the experience of Joel Matip means that Liverpool now have a solid defence. Alisson took them up another level with his goalkeeping.
But that’s not all. With a year’s worth of Champions League-winning experience behind them now and the encouragement of losing out on the Premier League by just a point with them, they could do so much better this season.
