5 Big Signings That Failed at Barcelona

Barcelona are a team that do not flinch in terms of paying big money for a player they believe that can help improve the quality of the squad. However, not every big money move comes off as expected, and there are quite a few players that have been flops despite costing a lot.

Here are five big signings that failed at Barcelona.

5. Dmytro Chygrynskiy - €25 million

Dmytro Chygrynskiy moved to Barcelona from Shaktar Donetsk for €25million, but unfortunately for the Ukranian, things did not pan out as he hoped. He only made 14 appearances in all competitions and despite then manager Pep Guardiola wanting to keep him, Barcelona sold him back to Shaktar just after a season for €15m.

4. Arda Turan - €34 million

Arda Turan moved to Barcelona for €34million after a scintillating four years with Atletico Madrid. However, he soon found himself out of depth at the Camp Nou and was soon farmed out on loan to Turkish club İstanbul Başakşehir where he will remain until the end of his contract with the La Liga club.

He managed 15 goals in the 55 appearances but never showed he belonged.

3. Andre Gomes - €37 million

Andre Gomes moved to Barcelona from Valencia for €37million but he was yet another player who couldn't impose himself in the team. Gomes was vying for a place in a team that was packed with stars.

Although he did make 47 appearances in his first season, he was mostly on the peripherals and after a not so great second season and just three goals overall, he moved to Everton on loan before making a permanent transfer.

2. Malcom - €41 million

From the outset, the purchase of Malcom for €41million seemed to be bit of a panic buy, with the La Liga champions swooping in the last minute to take him away from the hands of Bordeaux even as he was almost about to sign for Roma.

His 24 appearances and four goals have not convinced anyone and after just one season has moved to Zenit St. Petersburg for €40m.

1. Philippe Coutinho - €145 million

Amid much fanfare, Philippe Coutinho moved to Barcelona from Liverpool for a fee that would go up to €145million. However, in the 18 months that Coutinho has been at the club, he was unable to fans or top management that he was ever going to be as good as he was with Liverpool.

The signing of Antoine Griezmann meant the Brazilian was farmed out to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on loan.
