Liverpool might have won the Champions League last season but they fell short in the Premier League by just a point and even though they rejoiced winning the former, not winning the league might have put a dent on the celebrations.
After all, the Reds haven’t won the league since 1990 and a lot of things have happened in the world since then. 29 years is a long time and here we take a look at the things that have happened since Liverpool won the league the last time.
5. The Soviet Union broke
We begin with the classic one. The Soviet Union was so big that even after it broke, Russia is still the largest country in the world. The Soviet Union collapsed on ‘Boxing Day’ in 1991 (26th December), which was after a year the Reds won the league.
As a result of the collapse, a lot of new countries were form but things have remained the same for the Merseyside outfit on the Premier League trophy count.
4. The Schmeichels
This one has got to hurt Liverpool fans a lot. Peter Schmeichel joined Manchester United in August 1991, a year after the Reds won the league. The shotstopper won 5 Premier League titles with Manchester United while Liverpool won naught.
In the meantime, Peter’s son Kasper Schmeichel joined Leicester City in 2011 and he himself won the Premier League title with the Foxes in 2016. So, to summarize, since Liverpool won the league, Peter Schmeichel joined United, won the league 5 times, retired, and then son also went on to win the Premier League with Leicester City while the title eluded the Reds.
3. United caught up
In what felt like an impossible task back in the day, Manchester United not only caught up with the Reds in terms of Premier League titles but have also taken the lead – and that is despite the fact that they have won the league only twice this decade.
When Liverpool won their 18th and final league title till date, Manchester United had only 7 league titles to their name. Liverpool fans taunted the Red Devils to come back to them when they had 18.
As it turned out, United now hold 20 Premier League titles in their cabinet while the Reds are still at 18.
2. Stevie G show
Liverpool have had a lot of great players in their history and one of the biggest names among them has to be that of Steven Gerrard. The Reds icon is arguably the greatest midfielder the club have ever had but he could never lay hands on the Premier League title.
Not only that, since Liverpool last won the league, Gerrard made his debut in 1998, captained the side, left the club, played in the USA and then retired and is now a manager of Scottish side Rangers.
Who knows, he might be back at Liverpool as the manager before they win the league title.
1. 2 CL titles
Not everything has been gloomy for the Reds in the meantime. They might not have won the league for nearly three decades now but that doesn’t mean that they have been trophyless. Indeed, since Liverpool last won the league title, the Reds have been able to secure two Champions League titles – one in 2005 and another one earlier this year.
