In a statement, United have vowed to identify the individuals responsible for the racist abuse and take the ‘strongest possible course of action’.
“Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse aimed at Paul Pogba last night and we utterly condemn it,” the statement issued on Tuesday morning read.
"The individuals who expressed these views do not represent the values of our great club and it is encouraging to see the vast majority of our fans condemn this on social media also. Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our #AllRedAllEqual initiative."
"We will work to identify the few involved in these incidents and take the strongest course of action available to us. We also encourage social media companies to take action in these cases."
In addition to Manchester United's official twitter handle, some United players too posted updates with regards to this abuse as below:
Disgusting. Social media need to do something about it... Every account that is opened should be verified by a passport/driving licence. Stop these pathetic trolls making numerous accounts to abuse people. @Twitter @instagram https://t.co/bzow073aTw— Harry Maguire (@HarryMaguire93) August 20, 2019
This latest racial abuse incident followed Tammy Abraham being abused in similar fashion after the Chelsea centre-forward missed the decisive penalty in the Uefa Super Cup final shootout against Liverpool.
Fans on Twitter reacted in numbers to United's post condemning the abuse as well as on the retweets by Lingard, Maguire and Rashford.
Here are some fan reactions on all the above tweets.....
You ain't United if You racially abuse your players that's just sick— 21 Garbage (@carsoncaleb21) August 20, 2019

It’s disgusting, football has to take this racism problem seriously, as does the rest of society. It’s no good paying lip service to zero tolerance, the absolute scum need to be dealt with. Too many turn a blind eye— Rohan (@Chops8592) August 20, 2019

Using racism as a tool to attack an entire fan base is pathetic. Every fan base has rats and scum. These people don't represent any fan base football.— Michael Naughton 🇮🇪🇵🇸 (@RefundedRice) August 20, 2019
It’s actually disgusting to see. That’s two players in Pogba and Abraham racially abused in what, less than a week?— Anthony (@AnthonyMemi) August 20, 2019

What is wrong with some people? This is utterly disgraceful, disgusting and totally unnecessary! Pogba missed a penalty, so what!!! It happens in football it's part of the game. But bringing racist abuse into it is cowardly. These supposed fans are not proper fans just wankers!!— zuffle-mc-81 (@mikeycowin81) August 20, 2019

Disgusting. Think we should have sold pogba because he messes about on the ball and loses possession way too much and also is not worth the off field drama. Nothing to do with the colour of skin. Sad times when people think it’s ok to be racist because he misses a pen 🤦♂️— Kevin (@MeKevUK) August 20, 2019
I used to always say united fans are the best in the league in terms of quality. I am appalled. It is a fringe and they dont represent our collective values.— Naeem Ziyad (@neoziyad) August 20, 2019
I think a lot of em were not even united supporters and hauling abuses at our players with their small dog mentality.
United fans are racist and @GNev2 started it. Exactly what happened to Tommy Abraham. Fans were angry because of missed penalty.— Leonard Nnamdi (@nnamdi_leonard) August 20, 2019

Just because the 'majority' want a specific penalty taker doesn't mean that said majority would turn racist if somebody else took it and missed - it's football, let's just be kind to each other and stay United!
We get it mate, you did a tweet. Well done.— Alex H (@LLHallJ) August 20, 2019

To racially abuse someone for whatever reason, not to mention for a missed penalty, something that people from all races have done before and will always do simply tells, YOU ARE RACIST. You've been racist before the missed penalty and will remain racist after it. Disgusting.— Wim (@wimndiulu) August 20, 2019

Then came Jesse Lingard condemning the abuse towards Pogba as he retweeted and commented on Rashford's tweet regarding the same. However here, fan reactions changed a bit as they targeted Lingard's dismal performance against Wolves.
