La Liga: 3 Things We Learned From Real Madrid's 3-1 Win Over Celta Vigo

Real Madrid traveled to the Abanca-Balaidos to face Celta Vigo in their opening game of the La Liga season and came away with a 3-1 win. Gareth Bale returned to the side as Real Madrid moved above Barcelona in the La Liga table in over two years.

Here are three things we learned from Real Madrid's 3-1 win over Celta Vigo.

3. Return of Bale

Gareth Bale was expected to leave Real Madrid in the current transfer window, but nothing has happened thus far. So it was a surprise that manager Zinedine Zidane started the Welsh international, who went on to provide the assist for Karim Benzema's opening goal. Bale's performance even prompted Zidane to suggest he could remain with the club this season.

2. VAR to the fore

VAR played a significant role in the game, with the referee, having initially only given a foul for Luka Modric's tackle on Denis Suarez, but later showed the Real Madrid player a straight red. VAR replays showed him stepping on Suarez's Achilles tendon and the use of the technology continues to be a topic of debate.

1. Top of the table

Although it is only just the first game of the league season, it is the first time after 27 months that Real Madrid have gone above Barcelona in the standings. Barcelona lost their opening game and Real Madrid will be hoping that they can stay ahead of the defending champions for the rest of the season.
