FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has stated that while he would prefer Ajax to remain a strong team in Europe, he will be really happy to see his former teammate Donny van de Beek joining Real Madrid in this summer's transfer window.

De Jong made the move to Barcelona this summer and his fellow midfielder at Ajax Van de Beek has been linked with a move to Los Blancos after they gave up in their chase to sign Manchester United superstar Paul Pogba.

While De Jong doesn't want Van de Beek to join Barcelona's traditional rivals, he believes that his countryman deserves the move.

"I would prefer him to stay at Ajax as I would not have him as an opponent and, in addition, Ajax would remain strong," De Jong told ESPN.

He continued, "But if he (Van de Beek) ends up at Real Madrid, I would be really happy for him. I think he deserves it. He is a great player."

De Jong further stated, "He showed it last season in the Champions League, especially in the knockout rounds. He has shown the world and everyone in Europe that he has the ability to play at that level."

Van de Beek himself confirmed that negotiations are ongoing regarding his move to Real Madrid. He said, "There are still negotiations. I would like things to be resolved as soon as possible. When I am at the stadium and playing, I don’t ever think about my possible move."
