Of all the teams in the top 6 of last year’s Premier League, Chelsea had the worst start. After losing Eden Hazard to Real Madrid earlier in the summer and then not being able to sign anyone due to their transfer ban, they opened the season with a 4-0 defeat to Manchester United .
Needless to say, Frank Lampard will have to find ways to improve the Blues and avoid such an embarrassment again. The Londoners are set to face Liverpool in the European Super Cup and they would hope to come up with a better performance against the Reds.
For starters, they do have some great players to achieve that – and here are three of them who could be MVP.
3. N’Golo Kante
There is a reason why the Frenchman is regularly rated as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. In the match against Manchester United, the World Cup winner didn’t start and only came on to the pitch when it was already too late.
Chelsea had conceded three goals by then and there was only another 17 minutes of normal time remaining. Kante has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent performers ever since joining the Blues from Leicester.
There is no doubt that he is going to continue showing his class this season as well after playing the entirety of most season in a different role.
2. Christian Pulisic
The American was signed in January this year and was loaned back to Borussia Dortmund for the rest of the season. The youngster has been touted as a replacement for Eden Hazard but that might be a little too farfetched at this point in time.
The winger is no doubt very talented but it would be a while before he acclimatizes to the surroundings in the Premier League. If, however, he manages to settle down quickly, then Chelsea will have a player who is dynamic and can assist his team-mates while also not being shy to attempt at goal.
1. Tammy Abraham
He might not have had the best of starts to his Blues career but make no mistake here: this guy is a gem. Last season at Aston Villa in the Championship, Tammy Abraham scored 26 goals from 40 matches.
With Chelsea not being able to sign anyone in this window, having faith on Abraham becomes crucial and that gives the youngster an entire season’s worth of time to make his place at Stamford Bridge.
He is a towering striker in the mould of Didier Drogba and while comparing him to such a legend might not be the right thing to do, he has the ability to become a very good player for Frank Lampard in the near future.
