Matip combined with Virgil van Dijk in the centre of defence for Liverpool as they battled Manchester City for the Premier League title and went on to win their sixth Champions League trophy. All the plaudits for Liverpool’s rock solid defence have gone to Van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
However, Klopp believes that Matip’s role in Liverpool’s success in the previous season is underrated and reiterated that Van Dijk has been a pretty good signing.
"I think everything about him has been said, what a guy he is, what a player he is, but not a lot of people spoke about the impact Joel Matip had in the last third of the season," Klopp said, according to Goal. "I don't see a lot of centre-backs in the world who are better in that period, 100 per cent, pretty much without any mistakes.
"Virgil was the constant in that last line [of defence] and it felt always good when you saw him there. He organises a lot of things on the pitch. He's a fantastic player and was a pretty good signing."
The manager will be hoping that Matip continues to play at the top of his game in the new season as they once again go on the hunt for a league title.
