5 Probable Reasons Why FC Barcelona Couldn't Sign Matthijs De Ligt This Summer

After months of speculation linking the most prodigious defensive talent of the past 20 years (that's not even that hyperbolic) to Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Real Madrid and probably Bayern Munich too, La Vecchia Signora have officially confirmed they have signed Matthijs de Ligt

The 19-year-old - yes, he's only 19, and yes that is slightly depressing - has put pen to paper on a five-year deal worth an eye-watering €12m per annum - a contract which is said to have a €150m release clause attached to it.

Barcelona were said to be front runners in the race to sign De Ligt but they eventually cooled down their interest. We try to analyse five reasons why that happened......

5. Mino Raiola

Any club or manager who has dealt with Mino Raiola has never had anything good to say about this football agent.

Raiola is known for asking a hefty agent cut in any deal that he brokers with his clients which ensure that the club that buys his players pay extra to him if they are going to get his player. In case of De Ligt, Raiola is reported to have asked a €10m agent cut for the deal to go through, after which Barcelona backed out of the deal.

4. De Ligt's wage demands

Barcelona reportedly did not want to pay the kind of salary that was being demanded and that is now being paid to De Ligt at Juventus.

It has been reported that the player's agent Mino Raiola had demanded a 12 million euros per year contract for De Ligt and the Blaugrana refused at the very beginning of negotiations.

3. No Scarcity of centre-backs at Barcelona

One thing might be true that Barcelona actually don't need a centre-back urgently as they have loads of options which they can use from their squad.

Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti and Jean-Clair Todibo are four options for two centre-back positions at the club. This means that the Blaugrana trusted their options when the player and his agent demanded a hefty pay package from De Ligt to move to Catalonia.

2. Potential arrival of Neymar

This can be one of the potential reasons why Barcelona did not end up signing De Ligt as they are reported to be planning a sensational return of Neymar Jr back to Catalonia.

Reports of the Brazilian keen on moving back to Barcelona might have thrown them off track in the chase of the Dutch defender.

1. De Ligt's desire

In the case of Frenkie De Jong, Barcelona found it very easy to go ahead with the transfer as the player was very keen to come to Barcelona and all those at the club were made to force their hand by his eagerness.

De Ligt, on the other hand, didn't show as much openness to the idea of joining Barcelona which pushed the Blaugrana back in their chase for the Dutchman.
