German legend, Lothar Matthaus believes that Manchester City winger, Leroy Sane could become the new face of football in Germany if he decides to leave England and sign for Bayern Munich.

Sane has been repeatedly linked with a move to Bayern in the summer, who are looking to rebuild their squad following the departures of the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. The 23-year-old who is widely considered to be one of the best young footballers in the world, struggled for gametime under Pep Guardiola last season, starting just five times in the second half of the season.

This has led to reports that he could seek a move away in the summer, with Bayern keen to snap him up, which lead to with the club's chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirming that they are hoping to come to an agreement with the winger.

Matthaus who starred for the likes of Inter Milan and Bayern during his trophy laden career, believes that Sane would become the face of German football should he decide to take the plunge.

"I really think Bayern Munich [would] like to spend a lot of money, more than €80 million (£72m/$90m). In City he's not happy in one way, and City is ready to give him up. But the main answer has to be from Leroy Sane. Does he like to come to Bayern Munich, yes or no?," he said to ESPN.

"The important thing is Leroy Sane has to say 100 percent yes to Bayern Munich. And then he will be a big star in Germany, maybe the biggest face of German football in the last years because for the money that Bayern would like to spend on him, he can be the new face of Bayern Munich," Matthaus added.

Named the PFA Young Player of the Year in 2017/18, Sane has lit up the league with his performances for City ever since he arrived from Schalke in 2016 and has so far made 133 appearances, scoring 39 goals and helping the club win two league titles, one FA Cup and two EFL honours.
