5 Best Bargain Signings Made by Manchester United in the Premier League Era

Before their recent decline, both in the world of football as well as their transfer strategy, Manchester United had a long history of coming up with some of the best and economical transfers of all time.

Here are five such superstars who gave United much more than what was spent on them......

5. Teddy Sheringham

Manchester United spent £3.5m on a then 31-year-old Teddy Sheringham as replacement for Eric Cantona.

After quite a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, Sheringham eventually settled in brilliantly and at the age of 35, he ended up winning PFA and FWA Player of the Year after a 21-goal season that saw Sir Alex Ferguson plead him to reject a move to Tottenham in 2001.

4. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Another of Sir Alex Ferguson's masterstrokes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer joined Manchester United  for £1.5m in 1996.

The Norwegian striker and current Manchester United manager went on to score 125 goals in 365 appearances for the Red Devils, 149 of which were as a substitute.

Solskjaer is responsible for the most iconic moment in Manchester United's history as he famously scored the winning goal in their Champions League triumph in 1999 against Bayern Munich, which completed the Red Devils' treble of trophies that season.

3. Nemanja Vidic

Manchester United signed Nemanja Vidic, an unknown name from Spartak Moscow for £7m in January 2006.

No one expected this Serbian defender to become one of the best defenders in the club's history by the time he left in 2014 after establishing himself as one of the most fearsome centre-backs in the Premier League era.

2. Eric Cantona

One of Manchester United biggest legends Eric Cantona left Leeds United and made the move to their fiercest Old Trafford based rivals for a mere £1.2m on 26 November 1992.

The French striker made 143 appearances for the Red Devils between 1992 to 1997 scoring 64 goals and etching his name in the history of Manchester United as one of their greatest ever players.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United signed a relatively unknown 18-year-old Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo for £12.24m in 2003.

Six years, 84 goals and 196 appearances later, this Portuguese maestro became a legend at Old Trafford before leaving for Real Madrid in a then world record £80m deal.
