Former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars has revealed that the Gunners have not acted on his suggestion that they sell German midfielder Mesut Ozil and get Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech for half the price as he would provide more value for the team.

Ozil has been the topic of much discussion among Arsenal fans considering the club’s highest paid player is hardly consistent and does not step up in the big games for them. Arsenal are looking to offload the player but his high wages continue to remain a problem.

Overmars believes that Arsenal have made a mistake by not going for Ziyech, who scored 21 goals and provided 24 assists for Ajax last season.

He told Voetbal International: “I am a bit surprised that it is still so quiet around Hakim. “I think he has played better every year and his statistics are exceptionally good. Many clubs are increasingly looking at that. They look more at the numbers than at what he shows and what is happening around him.

“I think Hakim Ziyech is better than Mesut Ozil. I would tell Arsenal: sell him and you will get Hakim for half the price. But they didn't listen to me. So it could just be that he stays with Ajax.”

It remains to be seen what Arsenal will do in the remaining days of the transfer window, especially considering they have a limited budget and need to bring in new players to ramp up their defence after Laurent Koscielny went on strike asking to be released from his contract.
