Napoli striker, Dries Mertens insists that the club must buy "top level" players like James Rodriguez, if they are to dethrone Juventus as the champions of Italy, claiming that, "the club need to buy great players to raise the level of the team".

Napoli who finished 11-points behind Serie A winners Juventus last season, have been repeatedly linked with a move for Real Madrid's Rodriguez, with both president, Aurelio De Laurentiis and manager, Carlo Ancelotti keen to get the Colombian on board.

However, no deal has gone through has yet with it being understood that the two clubs differ in the value and payment structure for the player. Mertens for his part has urged the club to reinforce their squad in the summer.

"I just want to say that I see other teams are buying a lot, we've signed Kostas [Manolas]. All those we buy must be at the top level and therefore someone like James would be welcome to aim even higher. He could make the difference," Mertens said as quoted by Goal.

"I think we need to buy great players to raise the level of the team. We already have a strong squad, but if we want to win something, we need to buy in order to raise the level. That is clear."

Known for their attacking style of play, it will be interesting to see whether Napoli will be able to challenge the Bianconeri in the season ahead, considering that their rivals have significantly strengthened in the summer.
