5 Players With the Highest Release Clauses in Football

Barcelona recently signed Antoine Griezmann and to make sure that they do not have a situation similar to one they experienced with Neymar, they slapped a staggering 800million release clause on the player.

Here, we take a look at five players with the highest release clauses in the sport.

5. Lionel Messi - €700 Million

The greatest player in Barcelona's history, it was imperative that the club needed to tie Lionel Messi down and they did just that by giving him a new contract in 2017/18 which included a massive release clause of €700million.

Many expect the Argentinian to retire at the Nou Camp and it is unlikely that he will look to make a move away even if another club manage to generate the funds to trigger his release clause.

4. Brahim Diaz - €750 Million

Hailed as one of the brightest young talents in the world, Brahim Diaz was snapped up by Real Madrid last season after he expressed a desire to leave Manchester City. The 19-year-old did manage to make 11 appearances for the Los Blancos last term and is expected to be the future of the club.

3. Luka Modric - €750 Million

The reigning Ballon d'Or winner, Luka Modric was linked with a move away from the Bernabeu after struggling for form, but there is no doubt his value to the club as seen by his massive release clause of €750million.

While Inter are said to be interested in the his services, it is unlikely that they have the resources to sign him and in all probability should wait for the midfielder himself to leave the club in the near future.

2. Antoine Griezmann - €800 Million

The newest addition to Barcelona's star studded squad, Antoine Griezmann made his much awaited move from Atletico Madrid for a fee of €120million on a five-year deal, with the club slapping a €800m release clause on his head.

Widely considered to be one of the best strikers in the world, it will be interesting to see how Griezmann fares at his new club.

1. Karim Benzema - €1 Billion

The player with the highest release clause is Karim Benzema with Real Madrid slapping a staggering €1billion price on the head of the Frenchman if another club comes calling for his services.

Despite enjoying one of his best seasons in front of goal with 30 goals to his name, it is unlikely that any team would be willing to trigger his clause for his services.
