5 Player Transfers Between Real Madrid and Barcelona

The rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona is legendary to say the least, going decades back in the Spanish league. With hate ingrained in both sets of fans and the clubs themselves, it is no surprise that players transfers between the two clubs have been minimal.

With both teams dominating the league and winning multiple Champions League titles in the last decade, it is no surprise that there have been no direct transfers between the two clubs in a long time.

Here are five players that moved directly from Los Blancos and the Blaugrana:

5. Javier Saviola

Javier Saviola moved to Barcelona as a 19-year-old and was on their books for six years. However, he never really got going for the Blaugrana, with those six years including two loan spells away from the club.

Barcelona chose not to renew his contract after his second loan spell with Monaco, and Real Madrid swooped in signed him up on a free transfer, becoming the last ever player to ever move directly between the two rivals.

4. Bernd Schuster

Bernd Schuster played an important role in midfield for Barcelona in the 1980s and was at the club for nearly a decade. He helped the club win La Liga and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup as well, but a fallout with the club president and coaches saw him decide to move on.

The German then controversially signed for Real Madrid after leaving the Catalan giants, and moving to yet another rival Atletico Madrid after spending two seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu.

3. Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique spent the early part of his playing career at Real Madrid, with five years at Los Blancos giving him one La Liga and a Copa Del Rey.

However, the player chose not to renew his contract with the club, saying the fans never really appreciated him, and instead moved to Barcelona, where he remained for the rest of his playing career. He won two more league titles with them, along with a Cup Winners' Cup.

2. Michael Laudrup

Michael Laudrup was at Barcelona for five years, and was brought in by the legendary Johan Cryuff to rebuild the team. He had great success with the club during his time, winning four La Liga titles and a European Cup.

However, after the Blaugrana brought in Romario, taking their foreign players to one more than the permitted three, Laudrup chose to move to Real Madrid rather than stay on and fight for a place.

He won another title with Real, making him the only player to win five consecutive La Liga trophies with two different teams.

1. Luis Figo

Luis Figo was worshipped at Barcelona, as he spent five years at the club and won two La Liga titles along with a Cup Winners' Cup. Controversially, however, he made the move to Real Madrid after Los Blancos triggered his release clause of 60 million euros, making him the most expensive player at that time.

He won two more league titles with Real Madrid and a Champions League trophy as well but was never forgiven by the Catalan fans.
