Top 5 Attacking Trios That Lionel Messi Has Been Part of at Barcelona

Bonafide Barcelona legend Lionel Messi has played with some of the most amazing footballers on the planet by his side in his club career.

Over time, he has seen his strike partners change and he adapted to every single one of them in the most beautiful of ways.

With Antoine Griezmann now joining the Blaugrana setup, Messi has once again found himself to be part of an incredible attacking trio of himself, Luis Suarez and the World Cup winner.

But do you know which players make the list of strikers that formed a deadly trio along with Messi in the past?

Here are five such partnerships....

5. Thierry Henry - Samuel Eto'o - Lionel Messi

When Ronaldinho departed FC Barcelona for AC Milan in 2008, French football legend Thierry Henry replaced the Brazilian in the Blaugrana's forward line consisting of Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto'o.

In the same 2008/09 season, this famous trio at Barcelona won LaLiga Santander, the Copa del Rey and Champions League with Pep Guardiola on the bench.

4. David Villa - Lionel Messi - Pedro

The 2010-11 season saw David Villa and Pedro being added to the mix along with Lionel Messi to form Barcelona's front three.

Guardiola decided to put Messi in a false nine role with Villa playing wide left, and it was from this central position that Messi took his game to another level.

Pedro was installed to do all the dirty work of trying to gain early possession of the ball and came up with some key moments as Barcelona won both the Spanish La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.

3. Thierry Henry - Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Lionel Messi

Barcelona decided to land Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2009 which saw Samuel Eto'o move to Inter Milan. Though it seemed like a blockbuster move, Guardiola found it difficult to integrate the Swede in his playing style.

He was played as a backup to Lionel Messi, something which he did not take well as Thierry Henry continued to feature consistently.

2. Lionel Messi - Luis Suarez - Neymar

Probably one of the best trios to have featured for FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar came together to wreck havoc in the 2014/15 season as they landed the UEFA Champions League crown.

The MSN trident, as they were called, was pretty damn lethal and could turn around matches at will, a famous example of that being the insane comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League 2017/18 after being 4-0 down in the first leg.

1. Ronaldinho - Samuel Eto'o - Lionel Messi

When Lionel Messi first broke into Barcelona's senior team, he formed an attacking partnership with two greats of the game, Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o.

Messi took the right flank, Ronaldinho claimed the left side of the pitch and Eto'o played central. During this time, Messi was still an upcoming star, often swapping places with Ludovic Guily.

Despite limited game-time handed out by then coach Frank Rijkaard, Messi helped the Blaugrana win LaLiga Santander, the Supercopa de Espana and the Champions League in the 2005/06 campaign.
