The 2018/19 season came to an end with Liverpool winning their sixth UEFA Champions League trophy. Manchester City and Barcelona both won their respective leagues but were thwarted in Europe.
Here we take a look at five of the best players from last season:
5. Frenkie de Jong (Ajax)
One of the breakout stars of the season, Frenkie de Jong showed everybody just why Barcelona splashed out to secure his services. The 22-year-old is widely considered to be the best midfielder at present and is expected to become one of the greats in the future.
He was at his imperious best last season dominating the midfield and was key for both club and country, making 52 appearances in all competitions for Ajax, helping them win the domestic double and reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
4. Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)
Arguably the most improved player in the Premier League and one of the most important players for Manchester City, Raheem Sterling was at his imperious best, scoring 25 goals in 51 appearances in all competitions.
Without him, City would not be able to become the first club in English top-flight history to win the domestic treble.
3. Bernardo Silva (Manchester City)
The Manchester City Player of the Year for 2018/19. Bernardo Silva was without a doubt the star of the show in England, making full use of the opportunities provided by manager Pep Guardiola, so much so that he was the first name on the teamsheet for every game.
The Portugese star made 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals, while also being the most elegant player in the league.
2. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)
Voted as the PFA Player of the Year, Virgil van Dijk was the primary reason why Liverpool had such an outstanding season, which culminated in them winning the UEFA Champions League i.e the sixth European trophy in their history.
The Dutchman was not only a rock at the back but also popped in with some important goals when needed.
1. Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
Lionel Messi once again had an amazing season at club level, scoring 51 goals in just 51 games which helped him pick up a record sixth European Golden Shoe, while leading Barcelona to the La Liga title.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is the favourite to pick up a record sixth gong and is expected to continue his amazing form going into the next campaign.
