Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has implored manager Jurgen Klopp to try and sign Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, and said that the English club would now be an attractive destination after their Champions League win.

De Ligt has been linked with a number of clubs with Manchester United and Barcelona are said to be the front-runners but Paris Saint-Germain are also expected to be interested in his services.

However, Aldridge has asked Klopp to recreate the Netherlands defensive pairing of Virgil van Dijk and De Ligt at Liverpool as well, and said that he is the kind of player the manager should be going after.

He told the Irish Independent: "Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt have formed a great defensive partnership with the Netherlands and I'm sure they would like to build on that at Liverpool.

"Any player who saw the way Liverpool won the Champions League this season and the incredible scenes on the streets of the city as the team returned home would want a piece of that, and De Ligt is the kind of player that Klopp should be targeting. Liverpool should go after him."

De Ligt is yet to make a decision on where he intends to go before the new season starts, but Liverpool does not seem to be a destination that either party is really looking for. Liverpool have spent a lot of money on their defence and they wouldn't be keen on adding another superstar there, while De Ligt could be more interested in the money on offer at PSG.
