Manchester United are reported to have prioritised bolstering their defence this summer after seeing the impact that Virgil van Dijk has had at Liverpool.

The Reds thrashed out £75m to bring the Dutchman to Anfield in January 2018 in a fee which many felt was over-priced at the time when he arrived from Southampton.

However, the centre-back has been imperious for Liverpool since his arrival by helping Liverpool to two consecutive UEFA Champions League finals, winning one in the process.

His performances in the Premier League this season also saw him pip Manchester City superstar Raheem Sterling to the PFA Player of the Year award.

And according to the Evening Standard, United have understood that Van Dijk has turned out to be a bargain and they are now willing to invest heavily in their defence. Kyle Walker was signed for Manchester City for a huge price too and it did pay off.

The Red Devils are now stepping up their pursuit of Aaron Wan-Bissaka but Crystal Palace are standing firm over their stance on the highly-rated right back.

Palace are expected to demand a fee of around £60m for the defender and Solskjaer is likely to encourage the board to pay the money because he is an avid admirer of the player.
