Brazil's legendary forward Rivaldo has asked Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic to snub any advances from Manchester United this summer, in the same way that he had done when he was at the peak of his playing career.

Rakitic has been linked with a move to United, who are likely to lose Paul Pogba in the summer following a season in which the French midfielder did not perform to the best of his abilities.

However, Rivaldo believes that a move to the English club, which finished sixth in the Premier League last season, would be detrimental to the Croatian and implored the player to snub any advances.

He told Betfair: “There are rumours circulating about Ivan Rakitic possibly going to Manchester United but, while United is a big club with great tradition, I think the Croatian still has enough football to keep playing for Barcelona, as he is a great player.“United are passing through a bad moment, but their tradition is huge and any big player would like to play for them at Old Trafford.

“Now, it's time for them to refocus and start preparing for the new season. I believe they'll always be one of the best teams in the world. They continue to be financially healthy, so they should have tools to recruit big players soon.”

Barcelona successfully defended their La Liga title comfortably this season, but they were unable to deliver in the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. The Spanish team will need to hold on to the likes of Rakitic ahead of a summer of changes.
