Manchester United are reported to have ruled out considering a move for in-demand Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt

Reports in the media over the beginning of this weekend had aggressively reported that United could move for the £65m-rated Netherlands international this summer.

However, Sky Sports have gone on and reported that United have withdrawn the interest they held in De Ligt, with many among the Old Trafford hierarchy believing the 19-year-old is set to join Barcelona.

De Ligt had been one of the top performers for Ajax this season as he helped his side to reach the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

He has been a first team regular at Ajax for three years now and captained the club to a league and cup double this campaign, all at the age of 19.

Meanwhile, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed that the Spanish club is looking at selling some players in order to buy new talent from the transfer market.

He said, "Every year new players come in. So far we have confirmed De Jong's signing and now we will work on bringing in others and moving players on, as is normal every summer. Now is not the moment to do anything. There are always new signings, but now is not the moment to talk about it."

United, meanwhile have now lost out on landing two of their top defensive targets this season with Napoli refusing to sell Kalidou Koulibaly and United themselves moving back from a deal to sign De Ligt.

Understandably, United fans on social media were not impressed. Here's how they reacted:
