Just like in the stock market, the value of football players fluctuates based on their performance throughout the season.
While there are many players who had great performances during the 2018/19 season and saw a big rise in their market value, some players had poor campaigns and saw their market value diminish.
Here are the five biggest player market value losses since the beginning of the season:
5. Gareth Bale
Gareth Bale has not had a great season with Real Madrid, and that shows in his market value. On July 1, his value was 90 million euros but it is currently down 70 million euros, falling a massive 20 million euros.
With Bale set to move in the summer, now would be a good time for any interested clubs to try and sign him up. The Welshman needs to secure a move in order to be playing regularly next year and try to get back to his best.
4. Robert Lewandowski
Robert Lewandowski has not exactly had a problem scoring goals this season, but his return in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich was much less than the rate he was scoring at for the last few seasons.
With age catching up with him as well, his value also saw a fall of 20 million euros. At the start of the season, he was valued at 90 million euros and is now valued at 70 million euros.
3. Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi has had yet another incredibly productive season, even though Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-finals.
However, this is another superstar who has seen age catch up with him, as his value has come down 20 million euros as well. At the start of the season, it was 180 million euros and now he is valued at 160 million euros.
Despite his value falling, Messi is the winner of this year's European Golden Shoe, and has scored 50 goals and provided 18 assists in all competitions this season.
Marcelo has been one of the first names on the Real Madrid team sheet for almost a decade, but this season was not great by any measure for the Brazilian.
His value has dropped 25 million euros, with the player now being linked with a move away from the club. He is now valued at 35 million euros while he was rated at 60 million euros at the beginning of the season.
1. Alexis Sanchez
This season has been even worse for the Chilean, with his value coming down 25 million euros. He is now valued at 45 million euros, down from the 70 million euros he was valued at at the beginning of the season.
