Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has implored the club to bring in Matthijs De Ligt from Ajax to partner Virgil van Dijk, and said that the Netherlands pair is necessary as Joe Gomez will not improve a lot.

Gomez and Van Dijk have formed an excellent partnership in the centre of defence for Liverpool, ensuring that the team conceded the least number of goals in the Premier League season. Unfortunately for them, it was not enough as Manchester City pipped them to the league title by a single point.

Nicol, who played for Liverpool for more than a decade, has asked the club to act fast and sign up De Ligt to pair him with Van Dijk, as Gomez will not be a long-term option.

He told ESPN FC: “I’ll tell you what, De Ligt and Van Dijk at any club would be arguably the best centre-back pairing in world football, no question. And absolutely Liverpool need to try and get somebody beside Van Dijk who is in his stratosphere.

“The thing is though, Gomez before he got injured was doing an excellent job but I’m not sure that he is going to get any better than he already is to be honest with you. So I think it would serve Liverpool well to go and get somebody beside Van Dijk who is tried and trusted.”

De Ligt will be a costly option to bring in, considering he is being courted by Barcelona and Manchester United as well. It remains to be seen if the club will go ahead with such a high profile signing in an area that they don’t need much improvement.
