For the first time ever, all four finalists from both European club competitions are from the same country, England. While this has never happened before, there have been times when one country has been dominant in Europe, with at least three of the four finalists coming from one nation.
Here are three countries that had three European finalists in the same season.
3. Germany - 1980
The first time there were three finalists in European competitions was in 1980. Hamburg had reached the European Cup final while Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Mochengladbach faced each other in the UEFA Cup. Unfortunately for Hamburg, they lost to Nottingham Forest which denied the chance for Germany to sweep Europe in that year.
2. Italy - 1990, 1995, 1998
They had three teams in the finals two more times in that decade - in 1995, with AC Milan once again in the Champions League final while Juventus and Parma were in the UEFA Cup. It happened again in 1998, when it was Juventus' turn to reach the Champions League finals while Inter Milan and Lazio slugged it out in the UEFA Cup.
1. Spain - 2014, 2016
Spain first had three finalists in European competitions in 2014, when Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid made it to the Champions League finals while Sevilla reached their first of three Europa League finals. Both Spanish teams won their respective competitions, and all three teams did the same again in 2016, with the same result.
