The ex-Southampton man won both the Fan's version and Player's versions of the award. He has now become only the second outfield player to be named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year in the six years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
"It's obviously nice for me, but I'd rather win no [individual] trophies and have a better season as a team. We need to move on and focus now on next season and what's to come," he said, via ManUtd.com.

United fans on social media, however, sounded pretty disgusted at the decision to hand this prestigious award to a defender after what has been a dismal defensive performance by the team.
Here's how they reacted on Twitter:
With the players player fair enough cos it was 1 vote between them but I personally just don’t understand how more people think Luke Shaw has done more then Victor this season, I’m not saying Shaw’s done nothing but I think Victor has done a lot to save results and stuff like tht— #LindelofWasRobbed (@TTwxtter) May 9, 2019
congratulations to @LukeShaw23 ...incidentally, who won Slimmer of the Year?— Gino Borg (@gborg9) May 10, 2019
Shaw? He won't make the 11 of any of the top other top 6 teams, not even Leicester, Everton and Westham!— BabaYaga SAP™ El Padrino (@sapnon) May 10, 2019

When Luke shaw wins player of the year, you know your club is finished 🤣🤣— Mr. PY🌍 (@ik_parry) May 10, 2019
We’re done as a club when a defender wins all the awards after the amount of goals we’ve shipped this season. I’d have been embarrassed having an awards night!— Barry Boy (@3JackBarry) May 10, 2019
Solskjaer looks absolutely fuming on that picture with Luke Shaw— Anthony Bailey (@ant_bailey1991) May 10, 2019

I kept saying how it was a bad thing that our Goalkeeper kept getting POTY.— Sav (@jonmikesav8) May 10, 2019
You think I’d be happy now but not when our left back beats him to it.
I’m happy for Luke Shaw but the state of our club is summed up perfectly in those awards.

Ever heard that phrase 'the best of a bad bunch'? Luke Shaw wins United's player of the year award. He has done well but he's as guilty as any of his team mates for switching off lately and reverting to shit.— Gary Thompson (@gary302) May 10, 2019

Although fair play to his response to Dion Dublin’s question about whether he’s got room for the Sir Matt Busby trophy at home. “Yeh. I’ve got lots of space!” 🤦🏻♂️😂— Scott Patterson (@R_o_M) May 9, 2019

Luke Shaw signed for United from Southampton when he was 19, for a world record fee for a teenager then, in 2014. After a slow start to his United career in 2014, because of injuries and suspensions, he broke regularly into the first team in 2015/16.
A sustained run of form saw him being compared to the likes of Patrice Evra, with his technique and commitment very much resembling the United legend. However, he suffered a double leg fracture against PSV Eindhoven, which ruled him out for the season.
An excellent return this season to fitness and form has seen him become the undisputed left back of the United squad. Aside from Shaw, Andreas Pereira won the Goal of the Year for his screamer against Southampton.
