10 Teams Who Have Specialised in Premier League Goal Line Clearances Since 2006/07

Goal line clearances are a thing of beauty in football. There have been many pulsating moments from attacking and defending teams, as players from each side scrap to get the ball to fall in the right place.

Teams can be perceived to be more fortunate in these situations, or simply have a higher level of rate work and determination.

In any case, here's a look at the most goal line clearances in the Premier League since the 2006/07 season.

10. Wigan Athletic

Throughout their eight year stint in the Premier League, Wigan were always a side under the cosh. They did finish 10th in their debut season but subsequently found Premier League life tough before relegation in 2012/13.

Wigan ended up with 45 goal line clearances in eight seasons, which equates to between five and six per year – and considering they cleared 21 in the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons, the majority of years were pretty barren.

9. Manchester City

Perhaps a surprising addition to the list, but it hasn't always been record breaking football from Manchester City.

Spending a total of 22 seasons in the Premier League in three different stints, the Citizens have cemented themselves as one of the greatest Premier League sides in the Pep Guardiola era.

They do hold the record for the ninth most goal line clearances but, amazingly, cleared none in the 2013/14 season.

8. Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur are one of six teams who have spent the entirety of the Premier League era in the top flight.

While the stats haven't been tracked that entire time, since records began in 2006 they've cleared 49 goalbound efforts; including a brilliant piece of work from Toby Alderweireld earlier this season against Cardiff City to deny Junior Hoilett.

7. Chelsea

Another one of the Premier League's long stayers, Chelsea have made one more goal line clearance than London rivals Spurs - just in case they get short of bragging rights.

In fact, the Blues managed 10 goal line clearances in a 2011/12 season which saw them finish below Spurs in the Premier League...only to win the Champions League and knock Spurs out of the Champions League spots. Sorry Spurs fans.

6. Everton

Another in the Premier League's ever-presents club, a number of whom seem to have congregated around mid-table here, Everton sit on 54 goal line clearances - almost double their crosstown rivals Liverpool's 29.

Younger fans will most clearly remember Phil Jagielka's outstanding double goal line clearance against Chelsea in the 2017/18 season to earn the Toffees a point at Goodison Park.

5. Fulham

Back in the Premier League for their second stint, Fulham had previously spent 13 seasons in the English top flight – although the current season is only their ninth in the big time since clearances were recorded.

Fulham are helped here by a 2010/11 season which saw them set what would have been a single-season record for clearances (12), only for Blackpool and Sunderland to pop up with 16 each in the same campaign. For those not doing the maths, that's 44 between three clubs, just one behind Wigan's all-time number.

They've also got the most recent of anyone on this list, Tim Ream helping out Sergio Rico against Arsenal on New Year's Day.

4. Aston Villa

Since relegation to the Championship, Aston Villa have been unable to climb back up the football ladder. Spending a total of 24 seasons in the Premier League, Villa have certainly seen their share of goal line clearances.

Matthew Lowton made one of the greatest goal line clearances against Fulham, sliding in to deny a certain goal after Brad Guzan had been rounded.

3. Newcastle United

Newcastle United fans will be the first to admit that they've had some tough times in recent seasons, but it turns out it could've been so much worse...

The 2011/12 saw Newcastle's all-time high of 12 goal line clearances in one season as they raced to fifth in the Premier League. What happened after that? Nobody quite knows...

2. Sunderland

No, being saved from relegation at the last possible second again doesn't actually count as a goal line clearance, put your hands down The Massing Collection of Ex-Sunderland Managers Outside 90min Towers.

In 2010/11 they somehow managed to accumulate 16 goal line clearances as they finished a respectable 10th in the Premier League. Remember when Sunderland were respectable? Ahh...

1. West Ham United

Leading the line for Premier League goal line clearances is West Ham. Amassing a staggering 68 in the 12 and a half seasons of records (minus time in the Championship), the Hammers' most successful season brought just eight clearances.

Lucky? Determined? Constantly under the cosh? It's difficult to say, but it's never dull at the London Stadium.
